About the event

The 2016 Special Operations Adventure Race (SOAR) is the fifteenth edition of a 100% non-profit race, the proceeds of which benefit the Special Operations Warrior Foundation (SOWF). SOWF provides college scholarships to the children of American Special Operations military personnel who are killed in combat, as well as providing benefits to the families of service personnel who are wounded in action. The race brings elite and amateur athletes together to raise money for SOWF. Participants take part in either a 6 hour (sprint) or 12 hour (elite) race that combines the athletic disciplines of mountain biking, canoeing, trail running, rappelling, and orienteering. The race takes place June 11th, 2016 in Highlands, NC. Between 100 and 250 racers will compete in the event. The event is well established and well attended, having taken place for the past 15 years. Athletes participating in the event regularly spend large amounts of money on biking, running, and general outdoor equipment. Adventure racing is an expensive sport that tends to attract an affluent demographic of participants. The race also utilizes 50+ volunteers who are donating their time in order to support veterans. The racers and volunteers tend to be extremely loyal towards companies that express support for veterans and who support veterans through various donations of cash, goods, or services. Highlands, NC, the location of the event, is extremely affluent, with an average per capita income of $56,000. The event attracts significant local media attention, as well as social media attention, and sponsors' logos and donations will be prominently mentioned in promotional materials related to the race. SOAR seeks sponsors with a connection to active, outdoor lifestyles, and from companies with a commitment to supporting US military veterans. We are not offering standardized sponsorship packages through. We are seeking donations of cash to offset our operating expenses (the race is 100% volunteer run), and donations of outdoor related products to offer as prizes to race winners in a variety of racing categories.
