About our event

The One Shot Movie competition is dedicated to short and feature films made using just one shot. This is the 5th year for the competition following hugely successful and well received competitions in 2012,  2013, 2014 & 2015. In 2012 & 2013 the top ten finalists were screened at an awards ceremony held at the Hackney Attic and in 2014 & 2015 we relocated to The Prince Charles Cinema in Leicester Square.  A sold out evening in 2015 hosted by Scroobius Pip saw He and She crowned Best One Shot movie, win £1000 and a Limelite Lighting kit worth £1600.

The exciting news in 2016 is that the screenings will now spread over 2 days. This is due not only to the volume of entries we receive but also the incredibly high quality.

It all started from a conversation in early 2012 between three London-based friends, who at the time, were employed at the same media company... 

Our names are Daniel Birt, Keir Menzies, and Daniel James Palmer, and as well as working at the same place, we had another thing in common... 

We all loved film!  

We were all big fans of one shot sequences... The Copacabana steadicam shot from Goodfellas… the Dunkirk beach scene from Atonement… the Bobby Sands interrogation in Hunger… the whole of Russian Ark…

One rainy day in a the middle of a frustrating online edit session, Dan Birt said something like: "I hate editing. We should do a competion for films with one shot."  

It was ironic, because Dan was a post production editor at the time, but immediately we all realised the idea was actually really strong.  And that's how it started.

Since then we've enlisted the help of many people, including many well-known film industry buffs who have been happy to put their names to the competition.  Year on year, the number entries has grown and the competition gets bigger and bigger every year.

We are now a truley international competition, with entries from all over the world!  It's gone from a small side project to something that takes up more and more time, and we love organising it!
