Science Olympiad is a prestigious national science competition that tests students' skills and abilities in all areas of science ranging from biology and chemistry to physics and engineering. If you would like more information, a comprehensive overview of the entire program and its various events can be found at www.soinc.org. Solon has a long legacy and reputation for success in this program. The high school team has won 7 state championships and 4 national championships (3 of which have been in the last 5 years), and has been a perennial contender for the national tournament since the team's inception in 1995. This is a tremendous feat considering that only 60 teams are selected for the national tournament each year out of the vast total of nearly 7,000 in the nation. Additionally, in both 2013 and 2014, Google gave Solon the prestigious designation as Ohio's "eCity" based not only on its strong online business and industrial sector, but also based on its successful Science Olympiad teams at both the middle and high school levels. All of these accomplishments have made the SHS Science Olympiad Team arguably the most well-known and accomplished team in the nation.
As with any other successful organization, however, many resources and expenses are required in order to maintain success and high standards. Some of the costs associated with Science Olympiad include overnight travel/lodging expenses as well as materials. Several events require students to build complex mechanical devices such as robots and vehicles, which can be quite expensive, and study resources such as textbooks are also essential. Solon Science Olympiad receives minimal funding from the school itself, so we rely almost solely on our own fundraising and the support of area businesses and our community.
There are numerous opportunities for advertising and recognition of sponsors at tournaments, on our t-shirts, and the like. The Solon High School Science Olympiad Team regularly attends the Regional, State, and National tournaments during which thousands of people will see your recognition on our t-shirts and banners. We additionally attend around 10 invitational tournaments both in and out of state each year (including one this year at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology), and hold our own annual invitational hosting roughly 50 teams and over 1,000 people from across the country. This makes it one of Science Olympiad's largest invitational tournaments. During our invitational, sponsor logos will be placed on all tournament medals, slideshows, signs, and banners, company fliers will be included in team information packets, and an company representative will have the opportunity to present during the award ceremony. Since the SHS Science Olympiad Team is a non-profit organization, tax return benefits are also available.
