About the event

The Matlacha Hooker’s Inc. (www.matlachahookers.org) is a 501c3 charitable women’s organization on Pine Island, Florida and surrounding Communities. Our mission statement is “Making a Positive Difference in Our Community”.

On Sunday, November 5th, 2017 we will be hosting our 19th Annual Fishing Tournament and Derby to benefit Pine Island Elementary, our local grammar school. The proceeds from our tournament has enabled our school to enhance their music and art program, purchase books for the library, update their media center and purchase equipment for their physical education program. We are a small community of approximately 10,000 people. Our elementary school has about 230 students, kindergarten through 5th Grade.

The Matlacha Hookers allow each elementary student to participate for free in the Tournament. You would think that living along coastal Florida that these students are born with fishing poles in their hands. This is not so, as each year we are amazed to see how many boys and girl don’t know how to cast or catch a fish. It’s wonderful to see the smiles on their faces after their first catch. We are always thrilled to see a student from 15 years ago show up to participate in the adult angler portion of the fundraiser or just help out as a volunteer.

Each child receives a free fishing pole and tournament t-shirt which is theirs to keep. They are given a free lunch and we have various activities for them to participate in such as arts and crafts, face painting and games. Funds are raised by the Adult Angler competition, Chinese Auction, Silent Auction and our phenomenal Fish Fry. There is music and fun all day long!

We could use sponsors to help offset our costs. We also accept items to be used in our auctions.

There are many ways to support this event; being a main sponsor for advertising and recognition; give items or gift cards to be put into baskets to raffle; Gift certificates for items or trips for the silent auction; monies to sponsor children to fish; monies to offset costs of tent rentals, dumpsters and port o johns, etc.

My name is Sandy Kerr and I have been a member of the Matlacha Hooker Org. for 5 years. This is a group of over 250 women who volunteer their time and energy to "Making a difference in our Communities". We solicit funds and items to help in many areas eg: the food pantry; F.I.S.H school clothing drive; Scholorships; Beacon of Hopes Senior Programs; and we assist other organizations as well.

We do not have any large corporations in our area, and rely on every Mom & Pop to help us get things done.

Although retired, I enjoy social media and poking around on the computer. This is my first try at this.
