The first Islamic Arts Festival was held in Houston in November 2014. We showcased the art of 23 Houston based artists and the event was attended by over 5000 people. The Arts Festival brought people from diverse cultures, faiths and backgrounds together for a day of learning, fun and festivity. It was organized by the Islamic Arts Society of Houston under the umbrella of Islamic Society of Greater Houston.
An estimated 200,000 Muslims live in the Greater Houston area. The purpose of this event was to celebrate our culture and promote the positive image of our community among Muslims and non-Muslims. Some of the art was displayed inside the prayer area and it gave an opportunity for the non-Muslims to visit a working mosque for the first time. This was a huge step in promoting mutual understanding and in bringing the broader Houston community together.
During the festival, grownups and children alike felt pride in experiencing and presenting arts and discovered the beauty of Islamic arts in a festive and joyous environment. Our young volunteers expressed gratitude on being able to learn about their heritage and culture in a positive light. Inspired by our initial success, the next event is scheduled for the 14th and 15th of November 2015. We would like to explore any opportunity for collaboration.
